Allusion is made to the. resignation of Dr. Poniaro from tho position of Health Officer to the Natives, by tho InspectorGeneral of Hospitals in his annual report. Dr. Valinline states that, during his period of ten years' service, Dr. Pomaro has bten most zealous in his efforts for the. benefits of the Native race and adds that he feels certain that Dr. Pomare will ever be found urging, among olbor things, tho registration of Natives' births and deaths. Mr. F. D. Clayton, Feikling manager for the Bank of 'New Zealand, has been granted five, weeks' leave oi' absence in order to settle the affairs of his falJiw, who died recently in Melbourne. Mr. Mentiplay. of tho head office, Wellington, is relieving at Feilding during Mr. Clayton's absence. The death of Mr. Owen Wistcr, tho American novelist, was reported by the , American correspondent of the Australian independent cable service on October 11. Wister was born at Philadelphia on July 14, ISliO. His first book, "The Dragon of Wanlley—His Tail," was published in 1592. He was tho author of "Tho Virginian," "Red Jlen and White," "The Seven Ages of Washington," "Journey in Search of Christmas," a. "Biography of General Grant," and other works, and also contributed much prose and verso to various magazines. Mr. A. E. Hamsden, son of Mr. Ramsden, manager of tho Wellington Woollen Company's' works at Potone, who has been to England for the purpose of completing his education, lott London last month by tho P. and 0. liner Marmora, en route" to Wellington. Mr, J. J. Kexsli.iw, or Wellington, is a passenger by the same vessel. Mr. D. A. Baxter, manager for tho last sixteen years of the Napier branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, Ltd., has been promoted to tlio position of manager of the company's Christcliuvcli branch.
