A deputation from tho residents of Karori and Northland waited on tho City Council last night, in referenco to the setting aside of a pieco of ground in the cemetery roserva at Karori for future use as recreation grounds. Tho deputation was introduced by Mr, J. E. Fitzgerald. He read a petition signed by a largo number of ratepayers. Tho piece of ground suggested had been marked off on the plan, and contained somo fourteen acre*: When this was taken off there etill remained over fifty acres for burial ground. It was pointed out that what was asked was not wanted for immediate use, but for a futuro ro creation ground of this steadily-expand-ing population, so that no immediate expense would be necessary. It was hoped that, ,if tho council could not we its way to grant tho whole area asked for, it would at least grant portion of it.

Mr. James Mackenzie also spoke in support of tho object of tho deputation. All that was asked at present was that tho place bo earmarked, and not u;-as-a burial ground, lie could wo lie necessity for having a burial ground right next door to a thickly-populated district.

In reply, tho Mayor stated that, as (it niattel was at present before the Reserves Committee, it would b« ill-advised for him to express an (ex-cathedra-] opinion on the i*n,ttcr. His own personal opinion, however, was that that pieco of land was the last that should be- need as a burial ground, and, from what ho hnd seen of it, it was an ideal spot, fere recreation ground. There waa i no immediate prospect of the spot being hirn•it intt, a park, as tho omineil had already been nt groat expenfo in securing land fer reserves at Lyall Bay, while Aiulerson Park alone had cost tho ei( some The politien would Ik sent on to tho Deserves Committors for their coiwideration, and the matter wouM afterwards receive the attention of tho council.
