TUAHINE LIGHTHOUSE.

ITS ERECTION COMPLETED,

Tho work of installing tho Tuahino lighthouse on a Dermanent basis was completed on Monday afternoon, and the light was set jroinp. The first lighthouse erected at Tuahine was destroyed by fire, and it was replaced by an iron structure of a more substantial nature. Two years ago some bis slips occurred in the vicinity of the lighthouse, and it appeared as if the whole side of the hill where the lighthouss waj situated was on tho move. Consequently the tower tos dismantled, and a temporary light waa placed on a higher level.

The lighthouse contains an acrfone acetylene gas light, whieh haa a flash showing fix seconds, followed br an eclioso for six secends, and is capable of bciii; seen from a distancs of 13 miles. One of the features of this elm of light ifl that it can run Trithon-t attention for a couplo of months. The pas comes in cylinders, and is placed inside the tower, which is surmounted on a solid concrete pedestal, and is conveyed to tho burner by a 6mall tube. This light will burn day and night.

Tho work of erecting tho new lighthouse has been an ardnous undertaking, and in some respects a perilous one. Mr. J. A. Nicol, who was tho contractor for tho concreto pedestal, was subjected to tho heavy storms and gales during the winter, and it was a matter of congratulation that tho work was completed so oxpodiliously as it was. Whilst "the work of erecting the lighthouse has been such n difficult one on account of the situation and weather conditions, tho work of carting tho material round to the site was nono tho loss a meritorious feat.
