(By Telegraph.—Soccial Correspondent.! Palmerston North, October 18. At this week's meeting of the JJorough Council, the ilayor reported that, whilo V). Wellington, ho had interviewed tho Minister lor Railways in reterence to tho hoardings on the railway lino in Main Street West, and the Minister had informed him that ho was atraid that the Department had entered into a contract lor a period for these hoardings, but that he would inquire into the matter. The council decided to grant (lie local branch of- the Acclimatisation Society a site at the Esplanade for holding ponds, and to provide tho nccessary water from the borough' supply. The engineer was instructed to proceed with tho raising of tho dam at tho intake as soon as possible. A petition was received from 82 shopkeepers in Palmerston, requesting that shops bo closed at 12 noon, instead of at 1 p.m. on the statutory half-holiday. . A counter petition from 73' shopkeepers was also received, and it was decided to forward tho .petitions .on to tho proper authorities. Attention was drawn to the manner in which motorists -rode and drove round street corners,'and it was resolved to erect notice-boards, at tho corners of tho .Square', notifying, that they must come to a walking pace, and to call the attention of the polico to the by-laws,.
