VANCOUVER SERVICE.
IMPROVEMENT MOOTED. By Toleeraph-l'ress AssociaUon-OoDSriglit Sydney, October 16. Tbo proposal has been revived that a mail subsidy should 1,0 paid to tho Union Steam Ship Company, with a view to arranging an improved Australian connection with tho Vancouvor service, now being carried on by tho company under contract with the Governments of New Zealand and Canada. Tho new proposal is that the Commonwealth should pay tho company between .£20,000 and ,430,000 per year, with additional for the steamers to call alternately at Brisbane and Melbourne. In return the company is prepared to provido an improved and more expeditious service. • Under the contract which expired on July 31, the Commonwealth Govorument paid .£26,626 towards tho Vancouver service, which then went via Brisbane to i'iji, instead of via Auckland, as nt present.
