As indicating the expansion in tho export of pigs., the following figures, of the pork prepared for'" this purpose since 1908 are taken from the aDnual report of the Department of Agriculture:—lßGß, 3521 cwt., value ,Cil,880; 1909, 2G92 cwt., value ,£8552; 1910, 13,700 cwt., value .£32,833. The Clydesdale colt Prince Osiris, imported from Scotland by Mr. J. S. Scott, of Kakaia, arrived by tho Federal-Houlder-Shire steamer Kent. The new arrival was foiled -in 1909. mul wos bred by Mr. Jas. Veitch,. cf.Maryhil], Glasgow. His sire, Count Victor, was reservo for two years in succession for the Glasgow Premium (being beaten for first place on both occasions by his half-brother), and his graudsire, Hiawatha, was four times winner of tho Cawdor Cup and twice winner of tho Glasgow Premium. The dam of Prince Osiris was Carmen Silva. It may not be generally known howvicious some stags become ns they grow old. A fine animal, with magnificent antlers, was reccntlv killed at tho Buller (West Coast), which had previously disembowelled three cows. It was caught in the act of mangling the third cow. Another animal of tho same species, which had boan brought up by hand, became so aggressive as to be dangerous to passers-by, and had to bo made away with. Instances are also cited of stags having viciously attacked horses at surveyors' camps. - ■ ■' ' ' A North Canterbury farmer, who has been watching the magpies of late, states that these birds are doing more than anything else to keep down the grub pest. From what he had seen ho could safely say that the magpies devoured the grubs by thousands. Tho increase iu the acreage under fruit trees during tho past year, according to the Agricultural Department, was 2120. The increase in 1910 was 1395 acres, and that in 1909 1670 acres, or a total for the past three years of 5385 acres. ' Referring to tho export trade in draught horses the .Minister for Agriculture states in his annual report that unfortunately the number of mares sent away to Australia has been high. Tho total number of horses exported during the year was 7001 and of those GGIS were shipped to Australia. 312 to tho Islands, Gfi to India, and 8 (thoroughbreds) to the Argentine. It is reported that Mr. T. Bacon, stock inspector, of Pahiatna,' who has been on a fortnight's tour ,of tho .backblocks districts, states that a number of cattle in thc'.Akitio district have died from eating tutu. Dairy farmers must have strong, serviceable, and easily-cleaned cans. Victor is the name of the can that suits every requirement, and it pays handsomely to use these cans and no others.
