Amongst notices to mariners in the Gazette of last night is one to the effect that Captain Theodore Johnson, of the American schooner "Albert Meyer,'" reported that on June 6 he discovered a reef with not more than 10 or 12ft. of water over it eastward of tho Tonga, Islands, approximately in latitude 20deg. 53min. S. longitude, 172deg. 4min. W. Captain Johnson states that the reef extended in an cast south-eaytr-wcst-noTth-wcst direction for about'thrco miles, and that it appeared to be a steep-to. Tho weather was calm, and there woro no breakers over it, but the reef was made out by discolouration. The vessel passed within a third of a milo of MAITAI ARRIVES. Shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday, R.M.S. Maitai, from San Francisco,' via Papeete and Barotcnga, dropped anchor in the stream. After medical inspection the vessel berthed at tho Queen's Wharf. She left San Francisco at 11.45 a.m. 1 on September 20. Fine weather pjid smooth sea wero experienced for three days after departure, and then a heavy ga'.o was met with, and continued for forty-eight hours, greatly delaying the progress of the ship. For the remainder of the passage to Papeoto moderate seas and fresh variablo winds were experienced, arrival being . mado at Papeete, at. noon, on. October 2. The steamer left on October 3,- and;.after a-smooth passage, reached Rarotonga at 7 a.m. on October 5. After shipping a quantity ol fruit, she sailed at 5 p.m. on tho same day, Moderately fine weather was experienced until thrco days out, when a heavy S.E. gale was mot with, and continued foi" forty-eight hours, tho ship's progress being delayed in consequence. After tho gale abated fine weather and smooth sea were experienced until arrival. The Maitai has 1540' tons of oaTgo to discharge, 400 tons of which is for Australian ports. Tho cargo included 1300 crates onions, 180 sacks coconuts, 890 sacks copra, 50 tons pearl shell, and a large quantity of sundries. „Mr. W. G.
