Tlit steamer Lord Lonsdale, which arrived from jScw York \ia Australian ports last evening, encountered an easterly gale. Tho storm increased in violence and continued for four days. The wind raged alternately from the east and tho south, and tremendous H?ns struck tho vessel with terrific force. At times iiugo waves swept right over the eharthouso and tho funnel, iivcrythiii!* was battened down, and all deck gear that showed any signs of movinjj stowed below. The men who had to work on deck had to keep a sharp look-out for thii mountainous seas, as, often, they would break right over tho ship. On tlio fourth day tho storm was at its height, and tho vessel had to heavo to for nearly four hours. Several of tho crew were injured, and a Chinaman was knocked down by a wavo and received an injury to his head. TINSMITHS AT PEACE. Auckland, October 12. The Conciliation Council has arrived at a complete settlement of. tho Tinsmiths' and Metal Workers' Dispute. Tho rate of wages is increased one penny per hour (to Is. M.), tho week's work fixed at 47 hours, and the wages of second, third, and fourth year apprentices increased by 2s. Gd. per week. FIRE AT HASTINGS, Hastlnns, October 12. A five-roomed cottage on Karamu Hoad was destroyed by lire et 11 o'clock this morning. Tho owner (Thomas Kynn) was smoking in bed, and set fire to the bedclothes. He had a narrow escape.
