SYDNEY LABOUR SHORTAGE.
COMMISSION REPORTS, URGENT NEED FOR SKILLED WORKERS. OYER 3000 WANTED AT ONCE. By ITcleeraph—Press Association—Oopyriehl (Rec. October 10, (1.15 p.m.) Sydney, October 10. An interim report by tho Royal Commission whioh has been inquiring into tho shortage of labour has been tabled in tho Legislative Assembly. Tho Commissioners stato that, although both sides admitted that a shortago existed, it early became apparent that there was an abundance of unskilled labour available, with the exception of navvies for railway construction. There does, however, exist a great and permanent need for the introduction of skilled workers, owing to such not taking She risk of coming to Australia unless guaranteed work. The report details seriatim tho trades affected by the inquiry, and refers only to those in connection with which evidence was tendered. The Commissioners found that the introduction of new skilled labour would result in a great increase in the general body of work, and woald lead to the attainment of stability in various industries. One apparent aspect of the scarcity of labour was that people already here were unable to get house accommodation. After reviewing in detail the conditions in a large number of industries, the report sums up the actual immediate requirements of skilled labour as 3247 workers. The inquiry, which was opened on June U, is still sitting.
