ITS HISTORY,
(By Tolemph.— Press Association.) Auckland, October C. Tho only Victoria Cross won bv a member of tiio Volunteer forces of New Zealand has been handed to the Mayor of Auckland for safe keeping in tho Art Gallery, under tho will of tho Lite Mrs. Charles Heaphy. Tho Victoria Cross bcstowed upon" her husband, tho late Major Charlies Iloaiihy, was directed to remain in tho custody of her brother (tho late Mr. W. H. Churton), and, alter that, to bo handed over to the Auckland Gallery. Tho interesting memento was accordingly 'handed over to-day.
Tho incident that led up to Mnjor Hcnphy receiving the Cross occurred diiriiUf tho Waikate Maori War. One day a number of soldiers of the 40th Regiment vera bathing in tho Maungapiko Iliver, when they wero fired upon by tho enemy. In tho ensuing encounter, Captain Heaphy was in tho hottest part of the struggle. Three soldiers fell, and Captain Heaphy, wkilo aiding one of them, made a miraculous escaw. He was slightly wounded, while his clothes wero perforated with' bullets.
