THE TAXI AND THE FARE.
METER AND' OTHER PROPOSALS.
Last evening Mr. C. R, Dix waited on tho City Council and made certain representations on behalf of tho Wellington taxi-cab drivers. Apparently tho council were desirous of having motors for every oar plying for hire, but there were factora which would militate against the success of tho scheme. Under tho present proposals of the council tho drivers would have to charge for distance, and could not charge for time wasted by passengers. If tho drivers were allowed to ohargo by ■time ami by distance they would, and could have, no objection to the meters. 'The report proposed a chargo of Is. a mile for one passenger, and 6d .a milo each for two passengers, so two peoplo could rido for tie price of one.
Mr, Dix went on to say that what tho drivers desired was to chargo Is. for one passenger, 2s. for two passengers, and Gd. for every additional passenger. Ho had been given to understand that stopping caused extra wear and tear, so provision should bo mado for charging whero frequent stops were made. Tho Mayor said that tho taxi-drivers had only had before them a newspaper resume of part of the report. The councillors had had a very much fuller report placed before them that night. Howover wishes of tho peoplo whom Mr. Dix represented would receive every consideration, and he thought satisfaction would bo given. Ho remarked that ho had been given to understand that taximeters which would record time as well as distance were procurable.
