IRISH STRIKE ENDING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Couyrieht London, October 1. The strike on the Irish Great SouthWestern railway has been settled. Tho men withdrew their objection to handling goods operated on by blacklegs, and apologised for striking. The company will reinstate tho locomotive, men and ninety per cent, of tho others. .Men employed during tho strike will bo retained. Mr. T. W. Burt, Liberal M.l 1 . for Morpeth, and a well-known trade unionist, in a circular to tho Northumberland miners, denounces the Irish railway strike as arbitrary and ill-timed, and having a tendency to weaken an otherwise strong ease for recognition of tho union. NATIONALISATION OP THE RAILWAYS. London, October 4. . A meeting of the Amalgamated Railway Men's Society at Carlisle resolved in favour of tho nationalisation of tho railways, an oight-hour day for railwayman, and reform of the labour exchanges, in order that they shall not be used against trades union interests. GENERAL STRIKE THEORY DENOUNCED, London, October i. Mr. J. Ramsay Macdonald, Labour M.P. for Leicester, and ono of the Labour leaders, in a letter in tho "Socialist Review," strongly attacks syndicalism and the general strike theory. , FATAL RIOTS IN AMERICA. New York, October i. I'atal riots continue in connection vrith the railway workshops' strike. . Pistols were used at M'Comb, Pike County, Mississippi. A striker was killed and many dangerously injured. A regiment of the National Guard has been ordered ont to restore order. A train carrying strike-breakers was riddled by bullets while passing the town. A few of those on tho train were hurt. (Rec. October G, 1.5 a.m.) New York, OctobeT 5. The railwaymen on strike have bad several conflicts with tho police in Mississippi and South Carolina. Several of the liU'ikors'ivere shot. MOUNT LYELL STRIKE. Melbourne, October 5. The Mount Lyell conference sat in camera, and then adjourned till to-day without a settlement being reached. ' Tho executive of the Amalgamated Miners' Association in Melbourne has decided to support the strikers. Sydney, October 5. The Broken Hill miners have telegraphed to tho Mount Lyell strikers not to go to Broken Hill, as there are hundreds out of work there.

' Ths Mount Lyell compulsory conference was renewed, but failed to arrive at an agreement. Tho president declared the conference- closed. SOLDIERS AS ENGINE-DRIVERS. (Rec. The Amalgamated Society, of Railway Servants' Oni'erenco condemned tho Government for permitting the Royal Engineers to drive trains in Ireland daily during tho strike.
