Tho "Daily Telegraph's" Madrid correspondent reports that tho strictest censorship is being observed in Portugal in connection with tho Royalist rising. Correspondents aro only allowed to telegraph what tho Government wishes.The Royalists have smuggled in twelve thousand rifles and several cannon, which aro hidden in the mountains. They havo also won over' numerous gendarmes and Customs officials in North Portugal. Many'officials of high rank are favourable tp tho Monarchy owing to the lack of cUsciplino in tho array under the present regime , t j • Much monoy has been collected in Brazil to aid the Monarchist movement Spies gave information to the Government, thus onabling it to make arrests of Monarchist sympathisers throughout Portugal, including a thousand at Oporto. There aro at least six thousand Monarchists now in gaol, including aristocrats, lawyers, officers, and priests. A number of Royalists escaped to the mountains, where they are organising a small anny for guerilla warfare. TOWN PROCLAIMS FOR MANUEL CONTRADICTORY REPORTS. London, October 4. Ex-King Manuel returned to London hurriedly from tho country. Tho Royalists claim that North Portugal, except Oporto, is practically in tho hands of the Monarchists. Several towns havo proclaimed for Manncl. On the other hand, it is officially stated at Lisbon that all is quiet in the North. GREAT UNREST REPORTED. THE GAOLS OVERFLOWING. (Kcc, October 5, 11.35 p.m.) Madrid, October 5. The Marquis de Villalobar, Spanish Ambassador at Lisbon, reports the existenco of a state of groat unrost in Portugal. Lisbon telegrams state that many arrests havo been made at Oporto, solely on the unsupported accusations of ' carabiniers. The gaols aro overflowing,' and an exodus of leading families has commenced.
