OLD AUSTRAL WAR BOATS.
SCRAPPING TIIEM. Already tho Federal Government has commenced the scrapping of oljsolcto war vessels. Tho Naval Board 'has recommended that four of tho old torpedo boats —relics of the days of Steto defence— should be sold, and Senator Pearco will crct on this. Thcso vessels have for 20 years been in service. The naval authorities intend to utiliso their engines, which are woll preserved. One set of engines w to b? used to generate electricity. Tho Countess of Hopeteun and the Childcrs will be retained for reserve work. A pic-ket-boat will also be saved yet awhile from tho scrap-heap. In ono of the New Zealand bays (in Lyttolton Harbour) tihorc lies tho small slim hull of a torpedo boat that was once tho wonder and grace of tho port. Sho was scrapped many years ago, and her engines, a haitdsomo and powerful little set of a not very common type, aro now understood to b© in steady service iu Christdmrcli.
