AN ARCHBISHOP'S JUBILEE.

Archbishop Carr has celebrated tho silver jubilee of his appointment to the Roman Catholic Archiepiscopal Seo of Melbourne. In a speech he declared thai Catholics would centre their forces on the educational 1 question at tho next elections. "This," ho added, "arises out of the agitation for religious instruction in t'hc ■State Schools." , Archbishop Carr denounced the conscience clause as a mockery, a delusion, and a snare. Some months ago o movement was started to present Dr. Carr, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, on the occasion of his silver jubilea as archbishop, with a substantial testimonial of tho affection entertained for him by the clergy and laity, but Dr. Carr declined to accept any form of testimonial of a pecuniary character. Tho jubilee occurred on September 29, corresponding with the 9arao date in 1886 on which tho Papal brief by which the Archbishop was transferred from the Seo of Galway to tho Arcliiepiscopal See of Melbourne was then issued. ■ Arrangements were, however, mado to commemorate the evont on Sunday, October 1, when pontifioal High Mass was to bo celebrated in tho cuthedral. In the evening of the same day addresses were to be presented to the Archbishop by the Bishops of the province, the priests I of the archdiooeae and tho laity. Dr. Carr was bom in Galway, Ireland, in 1810, and eduoatod at St. Jorlath's Collego and the Royal College, Maynooth. , He was ordained priest in 1860, and was ' appointed Professor of Rhetorio in St. Jorlath's College in 1870. He became Dean of Maynooth College in 1872, Profes- . sor of Theology in 1874, and vico-prosident of Maynooth in 1880. Ho was mado Bishop of Galway in 1883, and was appointed . Archbishop of : Melbourne in 1886.
