TRAINING AMATEUR JUDGES,
: PROGRESS OF THE CAETEBTON SCHEME. Tho rules regulating tho. scheme for educating amateur judges, as drawn up by a subcommittee about three weeks ago, were discussed at a general committee meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society on Friday. The chair was occupied by Mr. W. Howard Booth, president. Tho rules (an outline of which was published when tho sub-committee drafted them) were fully discussed by the meeting, and were adopted after Eome slight alterations •had been made. Rule No. 3, providing that "in the event of there being more than three entries, the first tlirca to receive instruction ha drawn for," was struck out.
It was considered that the society should endeavour lo make provision for any number of aspirants to the responsible position of a judge, and not discourage them. Another suggestion which was adopted was the penalty of disqualification for interfering with the judge, or in a.ay way hindering him or preventing him from executing his duties. ■ The committee is anxious to avoid any objection to tho scheme, on the part of exhibitors, who might possibly imagine that it would have the effect of influencing a judge's decision, as there is no doubt that instances may occur in which exhibitors may. consider a judge, has chained his opinion, and so it was eonsidere;! that rules are -necessary lo prohibit the possibility of anything of the kind happening. The stewards o( tho section on which the amateur requires instruction are to bu responsible for the class chosen, and for the conduct of tho tuition. : The fea has been fixed at 2s. 6d., though some- members were of the opinion it should have been made higher.
