TEN-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. Jiy Telesrapa—Press Aesociation-OopyriKht Melbourne, October 2. The ten miles track amatonr championship was won-by Murray, in 56min. 30scc. DONALDSON'S DEFEAT OF HOLWAY. Rrferrinj to the 130 yaids raco between J. : .Donaldson (Victoria) and Chas. HcJ•way ■ (America), £or the world's sprint championship, ■ the Sydney "Referee" says that the Victorian demonstrated oned again- that ho is unquestionably IMway's roaster at sprinting, for He beat him oil eads up and in marvellously fast .time —a world's record, in fact. Holway in his..training had been showing great pace, and'had again'.dud again eot lveli inside evens ;oyer 120' yards r.nd .130 yards, but in the "raco he seemed almost outclassed by.: the brilliant Aush'alian, who. it is freely admitted, is one of thn 'eroatest sprinters the world has seen. The' Sports Ground'- track was in. excellent order, and the runners had the advantai? of a slight breeze, , but 130 yards in 12sec. almost staggered the cognoscenti. However, it must be remembered th.it three experienced timekeepers agreed to a tick, and one of,them was Mr. W. T. Kerr, admitted to; be one of the greatest of Australian watch-holders. After, tho race had been decided! fcho track .was re-measured, and found to', be' 4 inches over the distance. The world's record for 130 yards has stood to the credit of W. Johison, who as: far back as February 9, 1867, ran tho distance in 12 l-Bsec., at Fenham Park, England. A. B. Postle was clocked to run 130; yards in 12=ec. at Menzies, Western Australia, on Erater Mond?.y, 1906, ■ but the. figures could not be accepted as a record owing to the track having a fall of;2ft. o)in. between starting poiot and finishing point.. Tho .story, of the race is easily told, ■for Donaldson was out of his holes like a flash, was quickly in tho lead, and going Tight throusrh at his top, won by four yards amidst a salvo of applause. Time, 12sec FOE THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. It. would appear, says the "Referee," that of the various State teams to visit Wellington -at tho ye.-.r-end, that from Victoria will be by far tho stronaest-it looks like being a really formidable ccm-Wnatio-n. So far as New South Wales is concerned, the prospects do not appear too hopeful, although if IV. O'Reilly and Nigel Barker could bo induced to onco again enter the firing-lino, things would 3<V»k more roseate. Although we havo more competitors than ever in action in Sydney, there appears to bo but few ohampions, and out weakness is ■particularly pronounced in the Held same, polevauJtmj;, aud hurdling departments. However, tho coming big meetings—particularly tho Dunn Challenge Shield—maybring to light some performers of hi"h ■sla-ss. Let us -hope so, at any rate, ° DOMINION ASSOCIATION.
