COOKS' AND WAITERS' UNION.

THE BARE MAJORITY PRINCIPLE. The most important business at tho meeting of tho Cooks' and Waiters' Union last evening camo up by way of tho following report from tho executive and management committee:— "A special meeting of the executivo and management committee was held on Saturday, September 30. The meeting w;ts called in comnliancc with a resolution signed by four members of the committee. All the officers were present with two exceptions. Three of the signatories of tho requisition convening the meeting complained of the attitude of tho secretary, Mr. Carey, on the bare majority principle. The secretary replied in defence. By a vote of tho eommittco it had been agreed to suggest to tliis niei'ting that a special meeting of the union I.h> held on Monday, October 0, to deal with tho following resolution:— \ "That this union has no confidence in its general secretary (Mr. Carey) because, as the Labour party's candidate for Wellington North, he Ims signed a pledge, to support the principle of a bare majority decision on all questions—including the liquor issue—submitted to a referendum of the electors of tho Dominion.' "In the event of the meeting adopting the suggestion of the committee it was decided that tho vote on tho resolution should be by a bare majoritv of those present at the'meeting, but that at tho request of either tho mover of the resolution or the secretary the voto should bo submitted for confirmation to a ballot of tho members of tho union, such voto to be final, and to bo decided by a bare majority." ' The motion for the adoption of tho committee's report was discussed, alnd rejected on a show of hands by 17 votes to Speaking to a motion to publish a report of tho proceedings of the meeting, tho secretary said that there had been gro.ss misrepresentation somewhere, and that it was duo to him that the public should know that tho Cooks' and Waiters' Union was not yet prewired to accept tho udvieo so often given by hotelkeepers, to "Sack Carey."
