WHAT NEW ZEALAND WANTS.
Sir,—Regarding the atrocious land laws we are compelled to struggle against, made by a Government covered with a thin coat of so-called Liberalism, let mo give an example. In the year 1903 an emigrant, a Scotch farmer with capital, came to Kawhia. He wanted a farm, so ho got a map, ami had a look for vacant Crown land. Jfe picked on two small sections, containing about -100 acres. He applied to a Gotermfiont servant for this small area, and was refused. lie hod then to pay over -£1000 to a land shark to get a farm. This ballot system is obsolote. It is a lottery. If a farmer wants land lio wants it at once. I know good toiliug settlers who have gone in for several ballots, been unsuccessful, and gone to Australia, where the land laws arc good. To hear the members of this obsolete borrowing Government ray our Parliament teaches the world simply makes us laugh. Wo havo only to get out of New Zeahind, mid we find living is cheaper. When a bona-fide farmer wants a farm, give him ono. The country is lucky to liavo such men settling in* it. Tho ballot system docs not cncourago se'fctlcmont, it only encourages gambling, as < it is a gamble. To allow capitalists to • secure areas of farming land and chargo bnna-tide. farnwrs a lieavv advance on the i prico moans loss to every houe.it person, i Tk more, cucouragsmejit i
era the -richer wo sljftir air"be;~as' everything we live on and wear comas out of the soil. No, the farmers liavc allowed (his Government to remain in power too long for the good of New Zealand's people. Many people arc incapable of voting for thoir o\ni bast interest. To livo liappily together our farmers and Labour unions must l>o one large, united industrial body. Wo could tlicn legLslate for tho lielp of all classes. All tliis unrest, dissatisfaction, and worry can bo eliminated, but not until all aro united for our mutual benefit as a community. Let us try Massey for a change. Onco stop all competition and wish to go ahead, (lien this immense fabric of civilisation will decay and crumble to ruins. Socialism carried to extremes will stop all evolution, creation, and progress.—! am, etc., SCOTTIE. •
