PENSIONS FOR VETERANS.

REPORT ON. CLAIMS. Thirty-nino claims for compen&ation for naval, military, or volunteer services have boon admitted by the various stipendiary magistrates. The report by the UnderSecretary for Lauds on the inquiry 'ordered by the Government was presented to the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. Tho total number of claims received by (ho stipendiary magistrates was 007, of which 189 were from residents in Auckland, CI from New Plymouth, and G3 from Napier. Notification was given that no claims would bo considered from theso persons who had previously received grants of land or money, it being hold that if a person had onco received compensation tho door should not again bo opened for his benefit. A number of per- • sons who had received land or money sent in claims, and some others who admitted having received a grant for ono service ashed for consideration on account of militia service. Any enses of this kind have not boon recommended. . , Following is tho litt of tho veterans whoso claims havo been recommended for consideration, the service of each beingnamed:—James Allen, B.M. Tho report contains an historical review of the measures taken formerly for the compensation of thoso who took'part in tho several campaigns or obtained grants under various legislative enactments. It shows that in tho aggregate 7(M2 persons were compensated with .£70,707, scrip for .057.10 used in purchase of land and grants for 319,112 acres. When tho report was presented yesterday afternoon.
