OBITUARY.

MAJOR F. E. CAMPBELL. • (By Tclcßrapli.-Spccinl Correspondent.! Palmcrston North, September 27. ' Major I'. E. Campbell, n very old resident- of the Mnnawatu district, died at Awahuri yesterday morning, aged 88 years. Major Campbell was for many y.?ars Clerk of tho New Zealand House of Representatives, and afterwards Clerk of Parliament. lie enlercd tho British Army after -leaving college, and camo to New Zealand with his regiment. In .Inly, 1801. lie accepted a position as an officer of Parliament. • He then settled on his property in the Mnnawatn, and continued lo reside in that district until his death.

In the House of Representatives yesterday, the Speaker announced that "tho Clerk of the House (Mr. Ottcreon) had received a lelter announcing the death of Campbell, who had died that morning. Major Campbell had been Clerk of the House for 35 years. The Prime Minister moved that tho House place a record in its journals expressing its appreciation of tho services rendered by Major Campbell to Now Zonlnud. Hs desired to add his personal testimony to the worth of a man who did his duty in his day and generation with strict impartiality, and did it well. Mr. J as. Allen (Bruce) said New Zealand had been fortunate in the curly days in the high standard set by its publio servants. He very much regretted to hear of Major Campbell's death. The Hon. T. Y. Duncan endorsed what had bfon said, and remarked that Major Campbell had been noted in his timo for impartiality one! kindness, particularly in tho case of younger members. The resolution was carried, and it was directed that a copy should be forwarded to the daughter and grandchildren of tho lato Major Campbell. MR. A. S. COLLYNS. (Dy Telceraph,—Prosß Association.) Nelson, September 27. The death occurred last night of Mr\ Arthur S. Collyns, a very early colonist, and at one time a member of the Houso of Representatives and of the Nelson Provincial Council. Mr. Collyns, who was 79 years of age, arrived at Nelson in 1849.
