ROWING.

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. Tlie council of the New Zealand Amateur Ron-ing Association, in its annual ro- , portj(iCongcatulates members on its continuod'prosperity ami tho condition of rowing as au amateur sport in tho Dominion. ' The credit balance at the ba.nk is ,£55.125. 3d., the balance of.a-;sts over liabilities (which aro nil) is .£SS lGs. 3d., whilst tho net receipts for tho year over expenditure is 7s. Sd. The number of clubs affiliated to (ho association is 52, with a total active paying membership of 2919, an increase since last year of 1 and 13 respectively. The number of local associations is nine. The council congratulates the Wanzanui Association on tho manner in which it carried out the championship regatta. Mr. C. E. Stone, of the St. George's Club, who bos won the champion sculls for three years in succession receives congratulations. It is regretted that Sir. Stone was ineligible to measure blades with the Australian scullers in tlieir amateur championship. During last, summer twenty-four regattas were carried out by associations connected with the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association. Tho distribution was as follows-.—Auckland 4, with 32 races and £i2l in prize money; Canterbury 5, with 38 races and .£369; Hawke's Bay 2, with 15 races and .£126 lfls.; Otago 5, with 35 races and X 2-14; Southland 3, with 23 races aad <£13-J 10s.; Wanganui 2, with 19 races and i:229 10s.; Wellington 1, with 10 races and ,£94; llarlborough and Nelson I each (no other details furnished to the Now Zealand Association). Of tho 177 races rowed, senior events totalled 42, junior 47, maiden 63, and youths 25. Messrs. Gco. Lauchlnn and J. B. Widdqp represented tho council at the regatta, and tho kindness of the local association to those gentlemen is acknowledged. The council entered Mr. C. E. Stone, of the St. George's Rowing Chib, Auckland, and present amateur champion sculler of Now Zealand, for the champion inter-State sculls of Australasia, held at Sydney on May 6 last, but had to withdraw the same, it being subsequently found that Mr. Stono could not comply with the amateur definition governing the race. The New South Wales i Association advissd: "We have also de~ I cided that a man who competes for a money prize, whether it goes to his club j or himself, is not eligible to compete," from which it would appear that New Zealand oarsmen arc now ineligible to | compete in any inter-State contests in i

Australia. The Now Zealand amateur definition allows competition for money prizes, but all such prizes aro, however, paid to the club, and not to the crews, which derive no monetary benefit whatever. The matter has l>ecn taken up with the association mentioned, but up to tho present time no further communicatbn has been received.wisest year Muly) there is lo be held at Stockholm an Olympic gathering, at which an cight-oared race and a sculling race, open to world's amateur?, are to be decided. The council hits written for particulars regarding, these events, in ca?p any proposals may bo brought forward for fending representatives from the Dominion lo compote. Tho Mew Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has been avkeil to form a permanent Olympic Games Committee for New Zealand, and the council of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association has appointed two representatives to attend a meeting for that purpose. The council has considered the advisability of holding a conference of rowing representatives, as suggested by tho Canterbury delegates at fits last njimi.il meeting, but there does not seem to bo sufficient matter, at present to warrant the holding of one. The council, however, is in sympathy with tho proposal, which will bo borne in mind should it bo found advisable and practicable to hold a conferenco in the future.
