CONCERT AT PORIRUA.
An enjoyable eveniiiß was spent by Hie staff and inmates of tho l'orirua Mental Hospital on Friday evening, when (lie attendant staff nut on a bright little entertainment. The programme opened with an overture bv Miss Mungavin and Mr.. Svmcs, and Sliss Castle sang very sweetly "Fiddle n.nd I," and, as an encore, sno "ave a distinctly meritorious rendering of Iho "Kentucky Babes." Mr. Ward was very amusing with liis coinio sinning. Mr. Pearson, who is a well-known favourite in the district, brought down the .house with Ins comic song and dance, "I Was Standing nt the Corner of the Street," and was recalled three times-before tho nmlienco would allow him to leave the s.Uige. Mr. 1 , . Symcs, who is a very promising young artist, gave a violin solo. Mr. Kools_was in good voice, and his singing of "A Little Child Shall Lead Them," evoked approval. Mr. Barnes recited -, Tho Story of tho Stowaway," and, nn encore Ming demanded, he eavo "Tho Bush Christening." Tho closing'item was a litUe one-act Irish-comedy, entitled lin i\ot: lie-self at AIL" in which Mrs. Barnes and Miss Ciowley and Messrs. Barnes, Ward, and Iliclss took part, acquitting themselves in such a manner as to call forth demonstrations of approval. It was a capital production. Mention is due to Mr- B. Barnes, who coached Iho performers in their various parts. Ihe hall was then cleared for dancing, tho music bring supplied by Mrs. Curt in and Mr. Symcs.
