CHARITY CUP SEMI-FINAL. OBSTINATE ENCOUNTER: It was toped that Inst Saturday would sea the conclusion-of the semi-final games , for the Charity Cup contest, so that the final. could be played on Athletic Park on September 30, and the season closed. These anticipations, however, were not realised, for the two teams which were engaged .at Miramar played a drawn game. . This was the best that they were able to effect, although an extra, 40 minutes irero played, thus making the full time 130 minutes—rather strenuous going. The condition of affairs now is thai two more Saturdays at least will, have to be spent in bringing the season to a cloas. A southerly wind swept the field at Miramar, and, besides making things unpleasant for both spectators and players', spoiled what would'have besn a' goodl es-, hibition of tho , "soccer" game., . This was the contest' between' Rovers and Y.M.C.A., which ended in a draw—one goal each. "< ' .' In the first spoil Rovers had the wind in their favour, but' it did not prove tho advantage to' them 'that it' should have done, and'the" capital'defence of Hollis, Coate, and Gibson was-only o.nce penetrated. Hollis (in-go'al for Y,M.C;A.) was in' CTeat. form,"arid staved,.off 'repeated attacks." At lialf-time the )VKites, :4s indicated, were only one goal to.the:good, 1 and, at that stage tho match seemed quite a likely tiling for their opponents. But• : wll<St •'YvM .C.A. • : tnfned; roirtuF'.thejcould do no better than'their opponents, the splendid defence of White, Martin, and ' Rowan proving a hard barrier to win-past.'-.-Eventually, Mi'. H. Toyman, referee, blew his whistle' for" time, tho score being even—one goal each. Another ten minutes was then played eaohwwa t according to Cliarity Cup rules-. Hovers'now" woke up, ami put a lot of life into their work. Arthur Lowe, mado some nice, fast runs against the 'wind, and.on tho Y.M.C.A. side Murphy did the same. But all these efforts aud'others produced no effect- as far-as scoring'was concerned, and tho'twenty minutes end-' ed with "as you were.-" The referee then suggested to the captains of both teams that they should play another - twenty minutes, so as to allow the final to -be playeij nest Saturday. - The teams showed a- good sporting spirit, and agreed to go-on. Excitement now ran high. Y.M.C.A. wero given a penalty-kick, but could not improve their scored and the game eventually ended in ' the fashion mentioned übovo. .It was an obstinate encounter.
On Saturday the Marist Brothers' School, Tasman Street, brought to a conclusion what for it has. been a very successful season. Few clubs can boast of winning in one.season two cujs and thrco sets (33) medals, and just.being defeated in a, final for another cup. The fifth A division team have, won their cup for the third time, They also won tho mochils presented by Mr. J. F. Andrews. In tho ji-owly-formed school competition, in which there were nine teams, tho Marist boys ■were on top.
