O OTAKI R.C. SPRING MEETING. THE FIRST DAY. HANDICAP AVON BY PROJECTILE. The heavy rain which had ber-n expfrieneed Inst week had littlo effict on tho j track at- Otaki, which afforded perfect going for tho first day's racing in connection with the Otaki Maori Racing Club's spring meeting. Some fast times wcro recorded durin? \he day. The weather was fine, but a keen wind blew off llio ranges, and in the afternoon the conditions were rather too cold to bo pleasant. There was a largo attendance, but backers had a disastrous day, not ono favourite getting to ths front during the afternoon. Tho racing was keen, and same splendid finishes took place. TII9 start of the big race was marred through the rider of Floater carrying away tho tapes, and in an endeavour to get clear several horses collided, and so had their chances extinguished. The favourite Countermine, in particular, got a very bad run, and was Inst during the whole journey. The stewards met once during the afternoon, when they inquired into the Tumiiug of Equilas, but no action was taken. Appended aro tho results:— TE HIWI MEMORIAL STAKES, of 80 sovs. One mile. 2 Mr. A. Sir Solo was tho only withdrawal, and the remainder of iho runners were well backed. At tho start, Brown Trout and Scots Fusilier went out by themselves, with Turna whipping in the field. Running across the bottom of tho course, tho field closed up and, entering the straight, Otahu rushed to tho front with the others practically in a line. Turna then came very fast on tho outside, but could not reach tho leaders. Otahu won cleverly by a couple of lengths from Lady Volley, with Turua a neck away third. C. Emerson, who rode the first winner, was on Deploy iu tho Flying Handicap, and the Field Battery filly carried a lαt of money. To Kahuraiigi, who was favourite, and Deploy were tho first out, and led a bunched licid to tho turn. Full Rate then moved up, and got through on the inside, whilo Thetis also made a forward move, but had to go round. A great race to tho post resulted in favour of Deploy by half a length, with a head behieeu the second and third horses. Tho Maiden Plate proved to be the most popular event wi'Jh owners, no fewer than ninetcC'ii runners going to the post. After somfl slight delay, the field moved oft' to a fair start. Adare and Dirge were the first to find their feel, while Our Queen wos unfortunate. Dirge was in trouble at tho turn, where Our Queen had got through, and Kingswell was also showing up. In the run down tho fctraight Adare beat Our Queen by a head. Abercoed, who came very fast, was third.' Just after the start, the bridle came off Invicta, and the rider then threw himself clear. Tho start of.the big" race was spoilt by Floater catc'liin? tho barrier, and upsetting the whole- field. With a furlong gone, Equitas iras out by herself. Projectile and St. Felix !:eins next, and Countermine whipping in the field. Equitas was steadied γ-s they raced round tho bottom bend, and came back to tho field. Projectile led into the straight. Voutgang appeared on the scene at tho distance, but could not reach the leaders, Projectile winning by a length from Equitas, M'ith Voc-tgaug dear of (he others. The remainder were strung out, with Countermine in tho rear. A meeting of the stewards was hold after t'lio raco to inquire into tho running of Equitas, but, after hearing tho evidence of both owner aud rider, it was decided to take no action. M.okiira and San Port wore withdrawn from the Stewards' Hack race, Ivnvh'.g a field of seven. Parewanui and Fouga.s<ic were in the lead down the back, but tho field was bunched as they raced across the bottom of tho course. In tho straight St. Beos came with a late run, but Rongomau got in tho last run, and, in a close finish, won by a nock. T. Pritchard, on the winner, was soon to morn advaiitago than tho stable lad who rodo St. Bees. Tho i'oxion owner-trainer S. Mcssena, wlio has boon out of luck for a lone time, pxperisscod a turn of Fortune's wheel in tho Hack Hurd'les, when his nomination Wainuru, went t.o tho front at tho llagfall, and iliouuh holly challenged in t'lie. straight, lie lasted lons enough to win by a lienil from l-anlic, who was beaten for pace over tlio fnt-t mile. Waiouru and Inversus jmnpud the fir?t fenco together, but Waiouru ran down the next obstacle badiy. and nenrly tcok luveran off Iho ooui'ss. D.own. tho back the field closed up J
somewhat but in tho. lone run across Hip bulturn Waiouru had too much pace. Ciaelie, on the r:\ils. fame very fast in tha straight, but just failed to got up. A "surprise packet." turnoil up in tho Welter Hack event, when Kina prevailed very decisively over a bis field. Tho Trentlmn-trnincd Kbonile, who was ;v very warm favourite, .began slowly, and failed to make any impression on the leaders throughout the seven furlongs. Mr. .1. 1!. M'Donald's Kina, who was carrying move- coiulilion than usual, was entirely neglected by backers. ]Io rushed oft' in front with Emma, but soon shook tlio Hutt 'marc off, and entered the straight with a big lead, which ho increased in tlw run to tho post. Over tho last pineh .St. Bees came strongly, and beat i'uketotara for second place..
