At the Australasian Medical Conference, Dr. Lawrence, president of the dermatology section, dealing with radium therapy, declared it of gTcat valuo under some.inoperable malignant conditions. Occasionally surprising results followed. Radium was often of immenso valuo in the treatment of skin diseases, but a judicious selection of tho cases for treatment was absolutely necessary". Professor Allen, declared that five thousand cases of syphilis had recently been discovered as the result of a collective investigation in Melbourne by means of tho Wassermann test. It-was provisionally estimated that seven per centum of tho population of Melbourne was infected in some- stago or degree. There was no reason to suppose, said tho professor, that Melbourne was worse than any other capital. Dr. Hayward, in his paper on the treatment of disease, declared he was becoming convinced Ihat fasting for health purposes was a valuable therapeutic agent, and justified, on physiological' grounds as well as common sense. Mental suggestion was also valuable in certain complaints, and should .bo developed. ARMI MEDICAL SERVICE. (Rec. September 21, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, September 21. At the Medical Congress this evening, Surgeon-General Williams submitted a scheme for an army mcdicil service under the universal training scheme. Ho urged that medical students should be included.
