(Br Glkncok.l The first horss which has gained a penalty in the New Zealand Cup is Los Angeles. Consequent on his victory m the Chelmsford Stakes, he will now have to carry weight for aso, which, in his case, is Ost. 61b. In local circles it is thought unlikely that O'Donnell s horse will be brought back here. Probably lis pii e oioii will I>g tho Canlfield Cup. Iho distance in that is a better one for the chestnut son of San Francisco. G. Price, who is at present on a busincf* visit to Wellington, stated yesterday that he will titke five horses to the \\ ar.ganni meeting. Ono of his team will be the Charlemagne II filly Ermengarde. who is being travelled to "settle her before she is asked to race at Hastings in the big two-veap-old event. lne daughter of Watershoot is rather backward, owing to hitting her.self while galloping some time back, but, if she docs well av.-.'iy from home, a few' smart spurts will quickly sharpen her up.
The Highden Stud at Awahuri ln?t week sustained a severe loss through the death (bv accident) of a very fine wellgrown yearling by Sir Laddo from Truce. By some moans "the youngster broke its leg, and had to be destroyed. This was Truce's first foal.

iniThorTrentbain- -jockey. -W. Ryan,- is to ride'thb Sydney' Cup winner Moorilla at tho A.J.C. meeting, which opens next Saturday week. Monorail, who scored in tlio Avondale Slakes' yesterday, hails from Gisborne, and is by Monoi'orm, from Daffodil. She is owned by tlio well-known trainer F. I.oomb, and was ridden by F. D. Jones. Fort William is now an inmate of tho Endeavour Lodge stables at Trentham. Tlie New Zealand Cup candidate arrived at his new quarters on Monday evening, and was at once given a dose of physic, from which ho seemed to have recovered yesterday. He is very gross in condition, and J. W. Lowe, who already has two other New Zealand Cup candidates in his stables, will have to keep tho Soult horso hard at it to get him ready to run two miles in six weeks' time.'
The success of Crown Pearl in tho Maiden event at Avondale yesterday was fully anticipated here, and was also quite expected in the Manawatu and 'l'aranaki .districts. Seaman continues to make satisfactory progress (says a AYanganui exchange). Ho gave a very fine display over the schooling hurdles the other morning.
Mendip has been scratched for the first day's events at the forthcoming Wanganui meeting.

Prior to the race for the "Ascot Thousand" (fays the "Arrow"), won by Don't I'crget, J. Killorn endeavoured to inducc Ihe owner of Little Hurst to givo the Amherst gelding a run at Moonce Valley a week before, but the fear of incurring a penalty is said to have influenced the owner in declining. The manner in which Little Hurst disposed of Masonic and 15 others in the High-class Plate on the same course on Monday last gave evidence of the beneiii a race in public might have been to him. f IXTURES.
