A sensation lias been caused by tho publication of statements authorised by the Thiel Detectivo Agency, that President Taft incited Mr. ileaisl, tho American raillionairo newspaper owner, to flood Canada with election literature favouring Reciprocity. It is stated that Mr. Taft arranged with Mr. Hearst to send a special correspondent to Ottawa to conduct a campaign on behalf of Reciprocity and aid the Liborals in their light, and lias aroused a storm throughout tho Dominion. Conservative journals accuse Mr. Tafl of being an arch-plotter, interfering with a foreign country's politics in order to bolster up tho failing fortunes of the Republican party. Mr. Hearst's representative is a close friend of Mr. Taft's, and had arranged to participate in tho President's tour in September, but urgent orders not to do so wero sent to him. Mr. R. L. Borden, Leader of the Conservative party, has issued a manifesto pointing out that Reciprocity means tho final absorption of the Canadian fiscal system in that of the United States. ■AN ELECTION SCANDAL. Ottawa, September 19. An election scandal is being discussed in Quebec East. . Sir Wilfrid liaurier's opponent, Mr. Leduc, asscrls that he was offered a largo sum of money if ho would agree to retiro from tho election contest. His opponents dcclaro that Mr. Leduc offered to retire if given a Government position, especially that of Secretary to the Canadian Commission in Paris. Arrests are imminent. It was announced a few days ago that Sir Wilfrid Lanrier, who now sits for Quebec East, was standing for hvo constituencies. Another message stated that the nominations had closed and that Sir Wilfrid Lanrier had been elected unopposed for the Soulanges seat, his opponent, Mr. Leduc, having withdrawn.
