The Irish railway companies urn firmly resisting the strikers demands, and lmvo declined the invitation to meet the executive of tho Railway Servants' Association. The latter body thereupon resolved that unices the companies ceased penalising men for refusing to handle blackleg goods they would call out all the Irish railwaymen. A number of men imported from Manchester to fill tho Kingsbridge strikers places yielded to the persuasion of tho pickets, with the exception of ninety, whom tho police escorted. Largo drafts of troops are ready for emergencies. Men of thfi Royal Engineers are engaged in driving passenger trains. Goods traffic is suspendod. The South-Eastern is the only company which refused to accept blackleg goods. Its service is untouched. Three of tho Wexford iron founders have locked out their employees. Another firm has decided that as some of its employees had joined the Transport Workers' Union it would henceforth employ non-unionists. Tho prico of provisions is rising. •The railwaymen at Waterford demand the recognition of their union as the basis of settlement. They decline to handle non-union goods.

HOW THE STRIKE BEGAN. REFUSAL TO HANDLE NON-UNION GOODS. NO MAILS TO ENGLAND. London, September 19. The railway striko in Ireland aTose over two men at tho Great Southern terminus refusing to handle timber consigned by a merchant whoso men are striking. The newspapers, including the "Westminster Gazette" point out the impossibility of allowing tho railway men to discriminate regarding what goods shall be carried on tho railways.

The executive of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Men has arrived in Dublin, and is now considering the position.

A mass meeting of railway men in Dublin resolved not to further submit' to tho degrading conditions demanded by tho companies amalgamated. The executive will call out the Irish employees' British fellow-workers. Mr. Rimmer, tho strike leader, state 3 that' the dispute is strictly confined to the question of the handling of goods of firms employing non-unionists.

Only three trains ran on the Great Southern Railway in Ireland to-day. Letters are being greatly delayed, and mails are not being sent t'o Britain. Only a fourth of the usual quantity of butter has reached England. The provision markets in Liverpool are, as a consequence, stiffer. No further Irish supplies are ex r pected until the strike has ended. The Amalgamated Society of Railway Men's Executive, now in Dublin,-has invited tho railway companies' niahagers'to co-operate with them in an endeavour to effect a settlement. EMERGENCY POLICE.

NEW HOME OFFICE SCHEME. (Rec. September 21, 0.5 a.m.)

London, September 20. ■ The Home Office has elaborated a scheme for the registering of special constables for emergency duties so as to enable the police and reservists to join the colours in war time, and to give confidence to tho public with regard to tho protection of life and property without military aid during strikes. Strikers aro eligiblo for enrolment as they are concerned in suppressing the hooliganism, which is discrediting to their cause. The pension clauses of the police regulations will apply to'the case of special constables killed or injured. They will also receive payment for their services. AN END TO DIVIDENDS. BRITISH RAILWAYMEN'S DEMANDS (Rec. September 20, 8.45 p.m.) London, September 20. In giving evidence before the Strike Inquiry Commission, Mr. W. H. Hydo, General Manager of the Great Eastern Railway Company, declared that tho men's demands were so extravagant", that compliance with them would have 6wept away his company's dividends. Ho was opposed to tho recognition of the unions, which, ho declared, would not secure permanent peaca LINCOLN DISPUTE SETTLED. (I!ee. September 21, 0.5 a.m.) London, September 20. The Boiler-makers' disputo at Lincoln has been settled on a two-years' basis, with a shilling a tfeek advance in wages and an advance of 2J per cent in the piece rates. STRELWORKERS' DEMANDS. London, September 19. Nine hundred steel workers at Dowlais, Wales, havo struck for an increase of wages and recognition of the unions. MELBOURNE' BUILDING STRIKE. •Melbourne, September 20. The builders' labourers on all the big city jobs havo struck. They demand fifteen penco an hour. Tho unionists threaten to deal with anybody accepting less. NEWCASTLE DISPUTE. Sydney, September 20. The Wallsend wheelers still decline to resume work. Other mines, however, aro starting, and tho position is moro hopeful. (Rec. September 20, 10.20 p.m.) Sydney, September 20. The Helton Colliery wheelers have resolved to resume work on tho old conditions to-morrow.
