QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.
ON VICTORIA COLLEGE FINANCE.
Tho straitened finances of Victoria College are a frequent topic of discussion at the meetings of the College Council. At tli" iiiciithly meeting last evening tho Registrar (Mr. C. I', l'owlcsj reported a credit balance of .CI32G os. 9d., while there was on deposit a sum of «£ljoo. In a memorandum to tho council, the Inspector-General of Schools (Mr. Geo. Hogben) asked for certain statistics on the subject, for the information of tho Education Committee of (ho House of Representatives. .The questions, with the answers, were set out in a return propared by tiio Registrar, as follow:—
(n) What'is tho present valno of tho College endowments [■—The value of this endowment is (capital value). If any such endowments were set aside, please state tho names of such endowments and their present value.—The endowments fet aside by the Victoria College Act, 1897, include Section 1, lilock I, N'ukuniaru, 2185 acres; Section lb,Block IV, Nukumaru, 1730 acres; total, 3'.165 acres. Capital value, ,£8399. Rental received, .£74 7s. per annum. The College stands on a reserve of G acrcs 1 rood 23 poles, vested in the College under Tho Victoria College Site, and Wellington Collego and Girls' High School and Wellington Hospital Trustees Empowering Act, 1901.
What are the tolal moneys received from tho foundation of the College for benefactions, private donations, and subserip. (■ion??— Donations to building fund, «C 162,") donations to library fund, JMIT 17s. (id.; donations for physics, chemical hp. payatus, A' 255. For founding two scholarships (bequests of Jacob Joseph), .1:3000', for the Union Prize (prize for dvVting), J; 100: for biological observing station, £9. Referring to tho above, the chairman (Mr. Chas. Wilson) commented upon tho extreme poverty of iho State endowments. The rental from these, .£7l 75., was exeecdingly small, while tho private benefactions were limited. It was i great pilv, he considered, (hat the public did not s.\»ni lo realise and appreciate the value of the institution by aiding it financially.
