Bombay, September 17. Sir George. Sydenham Clarke, Governor of Bombay, has made an announcement to tho effect that there will be a reduction in the number of Taco meetings in Western India, and that bookmakers are to be banished from tho racecourses, the totalisator being substituted. Tho announcement embarrasses the Indian Government, through involving State recognition of a certain method of betting. Sir George did not consult the GovernBent on the matter before making the announcement. .
