HEAVY GALE AT THE HEADS.
■ » : — THE USUAL RESULTS. A heavy southerly gale, accompanied by a very heavy sea, Taged at Wellington Heads .yesterday, and prevented practically all vessels of the "mosquito fleet" putting to sea. Tho only steamers to leave port v.ero tho I'ateena, Clan Ross,' Monowai, and Mararoa, and each received a severe "dusting" as she forced her§clf out into the Strait. During tlio afternoon tho small "coasters" Huia and Manaroa left their berths and went down as far as tho Heads, but "could not look at it."
The Union Company's steamer Kowhai put in to Wellington at 1.45 p.m. yesterday s'lort of coal. She was bound from Gisborne to Greymouth, and would liavo continued her journey a few hours after arrival had the weather been better, As it is she is timed to leave at 6 a.m. today.
Heavy rain during tlie day prevented mueli work being dono on the wharves, and only the four vessels that got out did anything in the nature of working cargo. ■ Upon inquiry at the Heads signal station late last night it was ascertained that there was still a considerable sea running in the Strait, and tho gale had not decreased in force.
tthortiy after midnight ,t'ho Rosamond left the wharf at Wellington, bound for I'icton. Her success (or otherwise) in getting out in the teeth of the gale was not' ascertainable at time of going to press.
