THE SEARCH FOR POWELKA.

WILD-GOOSE CHASE AT MOKAU. (By Telcsraph.-Press. Association.) ' Auckland, September 11. Ihe rumours that Powelka bad been seen in the King Country and the Mokau district havo ml proved groundless, and the fifteen policemen wbo were searching in the vicinity havo all been withdrawn. A swagger, making his way through from New Plymouth to Te Kui'ti, in search of work, was evidently the inuocent cause of the invasion of the district bv policemen. To tho "Herald's" Te Kiiiti correspondent he expressed indignation that "a poor man can't walk through the country witho.ut attracting a force of policemen." New Plymouth, September 9. Tho statement telegraphed from Auckland last night that the police arc still searching tho Mokau district for Powelka is incorrect. The suspects havo boon accounted for, and the police withdrawn. "Nothing-new" was the answer of SubInspector Shechan last evening when the usual inquiry. was made about Powelka, the escaped prisoner. It was a fortnight yesterday morning since Powelka got out of the Terrace Gaol, and during that time no trace of the man has been discovered. There havo bean rumours in plenty, and in order that no stone may be left unturned many of them have been followed up, always with the same negative result.
