MASTERTON NOTES.
(Fiom Our Special Oor/esponaont.) ;> Mastcrton, September 7. . Tho hardest frost of the year was experienced in Mastcrton this morning—l 7! degrees being registered. ' Tho bulled: bred by. Mr. Donald M'Kenzie, of Woodlands, Mastcrton, which has carried all before it at the agricultural shows of the Dominion, has been sold to a Nelson settler, who, it is understood, intends taking it to Sydney. The snow is rapidly disappearing from the Tararua Ranges, sonio of tho peaks being now quite clear. The annual report of the local Inspector of Factories shows that no great' (liffi-. culty has been experienced in the'ad-; ministration of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act iu tho Masterlon district during the past year. ■ Two cases of breaches of awards were brought before the Court, one of which was dismissed. A considerable area of land is being put down in oats in the Masterton district this year. Thero were no prosecutions in Masterton last year for breaches of the Factories Act. The Inspector of Factories, in his annual report, states that occupiers are becoming more conversant with the requirements, so that breaches seldom occur. Practically the whole of the factories have beon'visited, and found to bs in a satisfactory condition. It. is stated that feed is scarcer in the Mastcrton district now than it has been during tho months of Juno and July. The ground is dry, and there is very little growth in the grass. An official inquiry will probably bo held on Saturday into' the cause of tho fire by which the Kaiwaiwai School was destroyed. Arrangements are being made for the opening of the school in temporary premises on Monday next. The annual report of tho Inspector of Factories, which has just been issued, shows that during the year 153 factories were registered in the Mastcrton district, which is an increase of five on tho previous year. The number of returns furnished by shopkeepers was 19G, showing an increase of thirty-six shops A sum of -£50 was taken at tho sale of work in Masterton yesterday, in aid of the Molanesian Mission, The funeral of the late Mrs. Edward Braggins. senr., took place at the Masterton Cemetery this' afternoon. The cortege was a large one. Members of the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club are making preparations for the coming sea.son. Tho first old bird race takes place on October 6. The programme for the season includes a race trom Invercargill, which is tho longest distanco yet attempted.
