NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telcgraph-Soecial CorrcsDondonU Palmcrston, September 7. Oneo moro the Marlon Club was favoured with ■ splendid weather, and the meeting was brought to a successful conclusion. The attendance was not nearly as large as was the case on the first clay, but the fields (though also smaller) were again on the big side. ' In the. Iluntcrs' Hurdles eleven starters went to the post. The public were much astray in their calculations regarding this race, and the first, second, third, and fourth favourites were never prominent. Montague, a full-brother to Mount Cool;, essayed to win all the way, but. at the business end, Himitangi rushed jiast him, and won comfortably. C. O'Neill, who rode the winner, had him handy the whole way. Sylvia Maid's rider lost his irons early in the race, otherwise sho might have been closer to tho winner. Tho Banter and Jackman. fell at the last fence, and Hercock (rider of the former) was badly shaken. Comersham fell early in the race, and broke his neck. The victory of Morecambe, in tho Telegraph Handicap, was foreshadowed by his display yesterday. To-day, he was first out. To Kahurangi soon headed him, but only on sufferance, and, at the turn, Morecambe ran to the front, and won easily by a length. Master Sylvia caiuo very fast at tho finish, and was just clear of Bronze and B/uc Lake. The remainder were badly beaten. There wcro no in tho Flying Handicap, for which Dirklinc (despite his poor showing yesterday) was made favourite. "Form," however, pointed to Labour Day, who eventually won easily. Patriotic was first out with Labour Day, and Peter Pan last to move. The last-nam-ed, did not improve his position at all, but Labour Day ran, up to tho front very smartly, and, at the straight entrance, she had everything well beaten. Birkline came very fast, and just headed Patriotic in the last few strides. Lady Fran was fourth. Tho jumping in the Hack Steeples was a great improvement on that of tho first day, and ' the whole of the contestants got round safely. Wirral, as usual, went to the front, mid took the field along at a clipping pace. Star Lass accompanied him. for a mile, when sho tiTcd, and Connecticut took second place, with the others strung out. Across the bottom Connecticut joined the leader, and the pair raced.to the hencoop together. The Auckland hunter, however, had most pace in the run home, and won by ten lengths. Montague was a poor third. Tho remainder were badly strung out.
All started in the Crofton Handicap, and Woodhcy and Smila.x divided (ho machine honours. Over the first six furlongs Smilax led at a merry ba't, but, across the bottom bend, (he whole field closed up, and a grand race ensued up the straight Epsom J.-ass got a lucky run on the rails, and snatched the verdict in (he last few strides. Woodhcy put in her usual brilliant finish, but the weight (old. Projectile and Waipunui were prominent for seven furlongs, and (hen (he latter got cut out, and was sent back. Con.-idcring that tho winner was onlv beaten bv (lie narrowest of margins la the "Welter mile on tho first day (which race was run in lmin. -los-cc.), and to-day had 2s stono off her back, she was ontitled "to more support than she received. In addition to the pronounced drop in tho weight, her trainer claimed the apprentice allowance of Sib., so that the mare only carried Cst. 91b. St. Bees led the whole way in tho Weitor, and won fairly comfortably. H was a groat race for the other places, the judge awarding I hem to Golden Age and Ot.ahn." Awhaandllaori Jlnid showed up well in the early part of the race, but condition beat (hem over the ],v-i quarter. Midian and Sandy Paul were very unlnckv during (ho run down the straight, or llmv might have been in tho places, but nothing had a chance with tho winner. In the Hack Hurdles. Kuroeo repeated his first day's form again, and won pulling up. Ho was kept in behind till the hack of the course, where ho was given J his head, and the result was not in doubt again. Oxton ran off at tho second fence, when, in tho lead. J
Tho final event, the Scurry Handicap, was won. on tho post by Gold Battery, Axis being a. head away eccond. Altcar, who had led all tho way, was closo up, third.
