THE TRAMWAY DISPUTE.

REMARKS BY COUNCILLORS. . During consideration of the Tramway Committee's report at the City Council last night Councillor Barber remarked on Iho fact that there was no referenco in tho report to the disputo between tho tramway employees, and tho corporation authorities. There had been a' statement in the press, said Councillor Barber, that there had been an ultimatum by the men. Thero should have been somo referenco to tho matter in tho Tramway Committee's report. It 6ee;ned to bo a serious matter for the city. Tho Acting-Mayor (Councillor Smith) said that negotiations had been pending' -for some time, and a deputation had conio down tho other day, and' tho committee had derided to meet them next week. Councillor M'Kcnzie: "Tho way wo are going on in this tramway affair is simply absurd. We don't know our true position. The committee seems to havo shirked doing anything," Councillor M'Konzio was ruled out of order at this stage. Later, it was explained that the roster which was being prepared by tho committee's officers would not bo quite ready by Saturday, but that a time-table approximate enough to torm a basis of discussion would bo available, and that matters , would then be ripe for a meeting of tho parties to tho dispute. Tho matter of motormen's certificates was also mentioned. Tho Town Clerk read certain communications which had passed between the Mayor and t'ho secretary of tho Tramways' Union. Tho latter had wired Mr. Wilford: "Am instructed to wire and ask aro you in favour of all and sundry, including clerks and labourers, obtaining motormen's certificates? Considering that motormen and conductors have to _ pass a severe medical test this proposition of tho Department is causing concern." The Mayor replied referring the union to Section 3 of tho Tramways Act of last year. "You will perhaps remember I opposed tho Bill which is now law."
