PKEBBLE WINS. TOy Telegraph.—Press Association.) Timaru, September 7. Tho Dunlop road race, from Christchurch to Timaru (112 miles) was held to-day. A moderate cold head wind had to be faced for the first half of the journey. Tho roads were generally good, but there were some soft places where the dry-weather traffic had loosened the shingle. About CO competitors finished within an hour after tho first man got home. The race was won by W. C. Prebble, Christehurch (35 minutes). K. Slow, Fairlie (35 min.), was second, and T. Coleman, Marshlands (2(imin.) third. A. Wallace, Mataura (22min.), W. Garrett, Hornby (28min.), 11. 11. Gunderson, Christehurch (29min.), and E. England, Orari (2Gmin.) wero the other prizewinners. Next, in order came 11. Gallctley (Ashburton) and Bowkct (Ashburton), P. ffillespio (Foxton), P. Ilumm, W. C. Knglcueld, 11. Henderson, and P. O'Shea. The scratch men arrived in the following order:—O'Shea, fourteenth; J. Coulter, sixteenth; A. B. L. Smith, twenty-ninth; J. Clark, fifty-third (he had tyro trouble). P. O'Shea (Christehurch) made the fastest lime, namely f>hr. 37min. 31 l-ssec. J. Coulter, Woodvillo (scr.), was second with shr. 37inin. Usee. O'Shea had a bad fall at Tenmka. Prebble, the winner, was ono of the small.parly of leaders at Ashburton, and kept his lead all tho way. This is his third attempt in the Dunlop race. He is 22 years of .age, sliml.v built, and weighs' (Ist. 01b. He rodo all the way except when wading tho Sclwyn River, and did not slop for refreshments, merely carrying some bananas and chewinggum'. A- very largo crowd assembled to see the finish of the race, th.? winning point being in .Main Street, at Ihe north end of the town, where some 100 yards wero roped off to securo a clear course.
