RATHER PECULIAR AFFAIR.
FIVE AVALI.S DEMOLISHED IN SUCCESSION. (By TclcErauli.-Prcss Duncdin, September 4. A startling; accident occurred at tli3 corporation gasworks this afternoon. Four men were working on top of a 10ft. brick wall, which was being erected in connection with extensions to the new retort house. They were engaged at (.lie (ime in striking tho centre of an arch joining two of a series of seven brick walls. Tho operations evidently disturbed tho brickwork, thn arch crumbled, and tho whnlo wall collapsed. Tho falling debris struck an adjoining wall, and, iii this manner, jivo walls 20ft. high, and 20fl. iong, were demolished one alter the oilier. Ono of the men foresaw (ho danger and stepped on to the outside wall, which remained standing. The .other threo wwo precipitated to the ground. One, .lohn JJrydi'n, wn= evidently struck on the hnd with a brick, and was removed to tho Hospital, and his condition is grave. The other two men escaped with minor inj iiries.
