THE WEST COAST DISTRICTS
EEMAEKABLY WELL OFF. ' Considering the unusual number ,of (rests wo have had in.the west coastal districts, says our .'.■:traVolli.n<f correspondent, it is remarkable to saV how well off they are in the neighbourhood of Feilding and Palmerston. I; can. only account for it by supposing that-thero"has been n larger store of : warmth in the subsoil than is usual in wiuter. . There. has been, so to speak, no'surplus'moisture. It has rarely happened that- the paddocks lia'vo shown the sodden and water-logged condition which is so generally the ease in.the rainy season. In''consequence, , the soil lias never been, -so thoroughly chilled as in ordinary years, so , that iu .«pite- of frosts there has. been sufficient latent warmth to keep the grass'on. the move. Of course, we liave tho prospect of a wet September. In fact, we need it, as . there is not nearly sufficient water stored up. below , to carry 'us into another dry summer. The. last couple of weeks feed has made wonderful growth. A very early spring is being looked forward 10. . • ' ••'
