CANADIAN WHEAT CROPS.
MUCH DAMAGE DONE. By Telegraph—Press Associ'ation—Copyright Ottawa, August 27. An unexpected frost seriously damaged tho wheat crops in Saskatchewan and Northern Alberta, It is anticipated that many millions of bushels of the wheat harvest havo been dashed to the ground. Tho loss is estimated at tens of thousands of pounds sterling. A RECORD YIELD EXPECTED. The Canadian wheat yield totals considerably over 100 million bushels. Advices of July 20 stated: Crop conditions continue to bo of tho best. From the farthest northern points to which the telegraph lines have yet been extended, to tho southern boundary, come reports of ■ample rainfall and crops shooting ahead rapidly. At somo points wheat is reported already in head. Crops of all kinds were never in a more promising condition at this time of year, and only a widespread calamity of some kind could rob Alberta of a record-breaking crop.
With the promise of a record crop in AVestem Canada (states the "Standard of Empire") the demand for labour for th« gathering in of this harvest is almost bound to assume record proportions. The province of Saskatchewan alone officially estimates that 20,000 extra harvest hands will bo required to handle this season's crop. This number'is nearly 50 per cent, larger than that of last year. In Manitoba and Alberta the outlook is for probably a similar amount of extra help being necessary. It is difficult to see where this volume of lalxmr can bo obtained, but every pari of Eastern Canada, where the harvest is earlier, will bo laid under contribution, and considerable numbers may be expected to nonie from the United 'Status, and also from the United Kingdom.
