VARIOUS MUNICIPAL MATTERS.
Tho usual meeting of tlio Potono Borough Council was held last evening there being- presente The MaiYflMMr.-.J. .\\. M'Ewan), and Councillors Piper, fraeman, Lodder, Brocklebank, Wakckam, List', Short, and Cox. . On tho rccommendntion of tlio borough engineer, certain, improvements were authorised to be carried out with respect to the lighting in Queen 'Street, Beach Street, Richmond Street, Bay Street, and Cuba Street', and at the junctions of Fitzhcrbcrt and Regent Streets, Aurora Street, and the Esplanade, and Hcrotauuga and Williams Streets. The application of the Workshops Cricket Club for the uso of a cricket pitch on the Recreation Ground was referred to the Ground Committee. It' was agreed that the Petonc Ambulance Van Committee should have the use of the Recreation Ground on September 2 for a benefit football match, and be permitted to charge for admission. . . '•'■,.. In view of certain representations which had been made to the council with regard to the license fees payable under the recently-dratted by-laws relating to the sale of milk, it was resolved that a uniform fee of 2s. Gil. for carts and shops be fixed, and that the by-law be amended accordingly, the rat? previously having been fixed at 10s. ior a shop and Is for a cart.

A motion by Councillor Piper to have a commiHeo of three set up to deal with the business management of the gnsworks was lost. Councillor Loddcr. contended that the officers nt present' entrusted with the management of the council's enterprise should be given a reasonable, opportunity of showing what they could do on their own responsibility.
