An "At Homo." Tho interior of the Fine Arts Academy in Whitmoro Street- was quite transformed yesterday afternoon when Mrs. Newman held a most enjoyable and large-ly-attended "At Home' there. Tho I main room of the building had been entirely carpeted in green, and furnished, and quantities of spring flowers—dafi'ouns, wattle, arum lilies, and violetsadded gay and harmonious touches of colour everywhere about, the dais at the far end of the room looking particularly charming with masses of'wattlo and large bowis ot arums, almost hiding the piano from view. To thoso of the guests whose homes "did not happen to be in Wellington, and .whoso tirsfc visit it was to tho academy, the pictures afforded a great deal of interest, and evon those who have 'had frequent opportunities of seeing them found something fresh to either admire, or condemn, pictures usually being a fruitful'topic of discussion. During the afternoon songs were dc-' light-fully sung by Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher and Mrs. E. Hadneld, amusing recitations wore given by Mrs. Malcolm Ross and, Miss Hardinge Maltby, and Miss E. Gow played pianoforte solos, as well' as some of the accompaniments. Mrs. Newman, wiio was assisted in receiving tho guests bv Dr. Newman, wore a very handsome, (slightly Empire tunic frock of mole-coloured miroir velvet, touches of ceriso satin outlining tho bod-, ice on the shoulders, and with a yoke and semi-sleoves of cream lace. With this was.worn a toque covered with violets, and bordered with folds of ceriso satin. Assisting her in entertaining thoso present were: Mrs. Menzies, wearing a long green coat and violet toque; Miss B. Fitzgerald, in white silk with a largo white straw hat trimmed with berries; and later, Mr. A. Newman. Among others present were: Mrs. Grace, wearing a long sealskin cloak over black, and a black bonnet with white osprey plumes; Mrs. D. R. Menzies, black frock, furs, and largo black hat; Mrs. Elgar, black braided velvet costume and large black hat with plumes; Miss Wardell, navy blue costume and black hat with plumes; Miss Kebblo, long fur coat over black frock and black hat' . with roses; Miss Brandon, mulberry coloured costume and toque to match; Mrs. Herdman, dark blue costume and white straw toquo trimmed with velvet; Mrs. Dymock, navy bine costume and black hat with bluo plumes; Mrs. Pearco, dark navy blue coat and skirt, furs, and black hat with ostrich plumes; Mrs. Lan Duncan, dark navy blue, with furs and black plumed hat; Miss Miles, wine-coloured costume, black .furs, and large black-.hat;., Miss E. Miles, grey satin coat and skirt and black hat; Mrs. Nosworthy, molo velvet costume and iridiscefit green toque; Mrs. C. Earle, mulberry costume and,sapphire velvet hat with white plumes; "Mrs. E. "Hodfield, in cream, with white and black hat; Mrs. Von Haast, brown coat and skirt and brown toque; Miss Dorothy Pollen, cream costume and cream hat; Mrs. Peat, black coat and skirt and black ' toque; Mias Peat, cream cloth frock and. large black hat; Mrs. M. C. Keane, brown coat and skirt and large oyster-coloured hat with blue flowers; Miss E. Nathan, navy ..blue costume, black furs, and black hat with ostrich plumes; Mrs. F.' M. B. Fisher, grey coat and, skirt; furs; and blue hat; Mis 3 Beatrice Day, black velvet costume, braided, and white straw hat with red; Miss Hardinge-Maltby, violet frock,'furs,' rfnd white toque; Miss Gow, bluo frock with cream yoke, and-white hat withblack plumes; Miss Z. Nathan, dark blue costume and large black hat with touches of cerise; Mrs. E. Menzies, Messrs. Hemes, Hardy, E. Newman, Wright, Nosworthy, Hine, Alien, Malcolm, Herdman, and others.
Ladies' Hockey Championship. Great interest is being-taken in tho ladies'-hockey.championship, which commences at Day's Bay on September 2. Teams will bB represented from all parts of New Zealand, and 300 ladies will tako part. There will be seven matches doily, and, for tho opening day (Saturday, September 2), Lady Islington and party will be present. Full of Yoars. There died at Hawksburn (Australia) recently Mrs. Hannah Osmond, a very old colonist, f aged 103 years, savs the Melbourne "Ago." The remarkable longevity of tho deceased lady and'tho fact tha't she was in possession of her faculties almost unimpaired had made her a very interesting personage, and several leadiu" people, including a former State Governor" had called upon and chatted with her about past times. Mrs. Osmond's later birthdays wero usually noted in some public manner as they arrived, as fresh scoring on her part against Fathei Time upon which many, people tendered their congratulations. In Knox Church, Master-ton, yesterday, Mr, The-mas Lawson'Elder, formerly of Masterton but now of Waipukuran, was married te Miss Louise Smith, daughter of Mr. W. J. Smith, of Worksop Road, Masterton. Miss Rose Smith acted as bridesmaid, and Mr. Reginald Anderson as best man. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Beard (Masterton), with Mrs. Moore, aro visiting Napier. Miss D. K. Richmond is visiting Nolson. Mrs. and Miss Hosking, Dunedin, aro visitors to Wellington. Mrs. Firth and Mrs. M'Rae havo gono on a visit to Nelson. , Mrs. White, Porangahau, is visiting her mother, Mrs. John Cotter, in Greytown. Miss Loeta St.. Georgo (Masterton) and Miss E. Halso (Greytown) are spending some weeks in Wellington. Miss Moore (Masterton) is visiting Mrs, E. Holmwcod in Wellington.
