Tho trustets have been notified'by tho Government that tho estate and succession duties amount to *£31,747 Is. fid. This amount will bo paid into the Treasury. Tho late Mr. Murdoch bequeathed ,£IOOO to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland, and the balance to connections in Scotland. 'HAMMERED INTO INSENSIBILITY." Auckland, August 2G. At tho Supreme Court, William Sherry was charged with assaulting Martin Monaghan and causing him actual bodily harm. . Tho case had peculiar features. Sherry found Monaghan in company with his wife, after having warned him to ceaso his attentions. lie hammered Monaghan i'nto insensibility. Monaghan had been in, hospital for six weeks. J."® jury returned a verdict of "Not guilty, unci Sherry was discharged. COAL MNIE CLOSING, Groytnoutfi, August 2G. The North Brunner Coal Mine is about ,to closo down, hence many men will bo thrown out of employment. Tie Mayor of Brunner this morning wired Sir Arthur Guinness to intercede with Government to open tho Wallsend Mine or reridor assistanco to enablo the residents to open it for work. The news of tho closing of the mine was not expected so soon, though rumours had gained circulation 'ately. LIBEL ACTIONS. AND A NO-LICENSE ANNIVERSARY. Masterton, August 26. With reference to tho action for libel commenccd by J. J. KollihcT, law clerk, Masterton, against tho ! "Wairarapa Age for alleged libel, contained in a report of a No-License anniversary meeting held at Masterton on Juno 30, the matter has now been settled by the defendant company publishing a full and unqualihed apoiogv in both local newspapers. Mr. C. A. Pownall, solicitor, acting on behalf of J. J. Kcllih'er, has to-day sued a Wjrit against Jabez Bridges, of Masterton, secretary of* the No-Liccnso League, claiming the sum of .£IOO2 damages for alleged libel in connection with the recent No-License anniversary. POLITICAL ADDRESS. Dunedin, August 2G. Mr. MTiinlay, Liberal candidate for Bruce, opened "his campaign at Stirling last night. At the close of his address, ■which dealt mainly with the land question, he received a unanimous vote of confidence. SUPREME COURT. Palmerston, August 27. Sir Robert Stout had before him, for sentence, on Saturday, a youth of 20 who had pleaded guilty to carnally knowing a girl under sixteen! years of age, at Mangaweka. Mr. Cooper, for tho dofence, pleaded that as the youth was. respectably connected in Wellington, and' liad never been before the Courts before, he be admitted to probation'. The Chief Justice re- j marked that probation had. never before been granted in such a case, and ho would have to consult the other Judges before extending it here. Ho would also have , to have inquiries made as to the youth's personal character. He, therefore, remanded him till Thursday for sentence ONE OF OUR SUMMER BAYS. ' . Timaru, August 26. An association has been formed to enoourage sea-bathing, and improve the facilities for bathing in Caroline Bay, and generally to make the best of what is considered a valuable asset to the town.. A drawback to the influx of summer-visi-tors in the past has been a lack of lodging icoommodation, but this is to bo remedied to some extent by the erection of n hotel overlooking the bay, to be an up-to-date wncern of its kind with 25 bedrooms and i promenade roof.
