AUCKLAND'S PROSPECTS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, August 27. Tho list of candidates for the variouu Auckland electorates at the forthcoming general elections is by 110 means complete . yet, but.ihc-ro is a dearth of definite announcements 011 the part of intending aspirants for Parliamentary honours. 111(Iniries mado yesterday indicated that for the present several likely candidates are withholding their decisions in some e;»~.s. This is due to a desire to first ascertain what "tho other fellow" means to do. In others it is accounted for liy what is perhaps a natural desire to discover a nico pocket constituency where tjio chances of election look promising. Unfortunately there was disclosed in the eourso of inquiry a somewhat widely shared disinclination amongst men _ eminently suitiiblo to represent tho citizens in Purlin* incut to stand. Some prominent business men .stated that tho' cause of their reluctance to como forward at the elections was the feeling that it would entail tho adoption of tactics repulsive to them. As ono put it, "You have nowadays to grind axes for all sorts of people to promise this to 0110 man, that to another. Again, it is not a pleasant ord'.al to address audionces and lo be subjected to all kinds of badinage and sometimes worse at tho hands of a certain class of electors. I for mo would not accept the burden." Another reason actuating some 111011 of tho best stamp in declining to take to tho hustings was stated to bo that their business interests would suffer to an extent that thoy could not all'ord. That theso objections to standing for Parliament are not; general i eevidcnccd by the fact that tho doctors arc already assured of having several candidates of tho right class seeking their votes when the timo comcs.
