"MERCHANTS EMPLOYEES UNION."
[To the Editor.] ' Sir,—ln reply to the loiter appearing in to-day's issue signed by "Warehouse Employee," asserting that the "union" has befin formed by "agitators," to endeavour to obtain assistance by co-opera-tion with skilled men, I say emphatically that the union has been formed by "stilled assistants," and it can be easily proved by the membership. Only on Friday la'st twelve assistants in a softgoods warehouse became members, and regarding this "skilled man" not being consulted, well, if he is too lazy to road the daily papers he is not of much value, because numerous accounts havo been published inviting all interested to attond meetings. Also our president has called oil almost every firm. Regarding the petitions being sent around, I might say it is anything; but justice, that they should be sent around during hours of business, and by heads of departments who are paid at the rate of .£3 to .E.i weekly and bonus, and the. poor sweated assistant on 3.is. weekly. I should suggest that "Wnrehouso Employee" should sign himself ".Manager." as I truly believe him lo be, otherwise lie would have been only too glad to sign his own mime nnd plca-o his employees. I appeal jo the community to give this matter their serious consideration. Thanking you for publishing same,—l am, etc., 355. ASSISTANT.
