The City Engineer recommended tho council to-ni«ht to urge tho Government to establish a testing station to make official tests of tho suitability of stones for read metal. The Government Road Board recently established in England has decided to take up this work. ; A COUNCIL ELECTION. Christchurch, August 24. The election of a city councillor to fill the vacancy in the Central Ward representation at t.ho council took place to-day, the result being:—ll. D. Acland (Citizens' Association nominee), 1*261 ; Dr. Thacker (Independent), 6GG; E. Hoppy (Labour), G29; E. Howard (Advanced Labour nnd Sccialist), 359NEW PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY. Watiganui, Aiignst 24. ■ To-night it was decided to establish a philo-ophical society, which it is intended to affiliate with the New Zealand Institute. Tho society will start with a membership of about 80. A RUSH FOR LAND. .. Invercargill, August 2L Tho desire to ko on the land and tho avidity with which available land is sought were evidenced by the demand for tpveral worked-out sawmill areas submitted to ballot at the Lands Oh'ico to-day. For 15 sections close upon COO applications were received,.'the majority bring those of Southland people not possessing land. Much excitement prevailed during the course of tho ballot. TERRIBLE INJURIES. ' • Waihi, August 21. A miner named Ilarry Bullcck, working at the Grand Junction mine, received terrible injuries to his head, face, and other parts of the body as tho result of an explosion in a winze. It appears that Bullock w.-.s using a pick nnd struck nn unexploded charge in a hole. He is not expected to recover.
