INTERESTING LITTLE STORY. Quito a smart arrest was effected by Detective Hammond a day or two ago. It had been aliened to the police that "certain things" had been going on in different parts of the city recently, ad apparently being the work of the samo person. On the morning of the day when tho arrest was made a telephone message was received intimating that a rertnin cheque had bpen passed on to a resident of Taita, and Detective Hammond immediately sec out on a bicycle to acquire further information. • After passim; the Hull the detective observed three men approaching in a spring cart, and one of these appeared to be a trifle out of place. At all events tho -detective got ell his machine, and while looking for a pune.turo with ouo eye surveyed one of the men in tho cart) with the other. The stranger also appeared to take particular interest in the do. tective, and suddenly jumped out of tho ca-rt and entered a house. That samo house had a fascination for the dotectiye, and following the man ho discovered hun arguing in the backyard wit.li the owner of the" premises. One thing led to • another—one thing generally docs lead ta another—and when Detective Hammond discovered that the owner of the premises knew nothing about his visitor, the latter was taken in charge. It is understood that the arrested one when searched had in his possession certain things which the detective wasstronp,ly inclined <o regard as presumptive evidence that lie had caught the man he was looking for. Tho most peculiar part of it all was Hint the detective acted, apparently on what can only be termed "pure Professional instinct."' At all events ho had never seen the man before.
