CHEESE CASES.
BEWARE OF UNSEASONED TIMBER. Tho timber used in butter and chceso cases—more especially tho latter—was referred to in a recent address by Mr. J. R. Scott, secretary of the South Islaud Dairy Association, liv shipping cheese in cases made of unseasoned timber,.said Mr. Scott, tho article was damaged, and claims were made at Homo on thes-o damaged cargoes. farmers wanted to do over.v,thing to minimise the claims because they worked against them. The speaker mentioned tho claims made iu regard to damaged frozen'meat, and said men in England were getting ,£3OOO a year for adjudicating these claims as between the shipper and the Homo merchant—claims more or less bogus. Everything in the way of damage and claims had to be ultimately paid by tho producer. The cheese shipped in dried timb:r eases, however, did not usually suffer. Mr. Scott, said he did not. think the factories should jamb the train vans so full of cases. He favoured tho IC vans for tho transport of the clicese. In his opinion it would pay them to use better wood in thejr cases, even if it cost Gd. more to turn the cases out.
