SHEARERS' ACCOMMODATION BILL.
OPPOSITION IN TARANAKI. The Shearers' Accommodation Amendment Bill was discussed at last, week's meeting ->f the Taranaki Provincial Executive of tho Farmers' Union. Mr. 6. Maxwell said he did not seo any necessity,'for a Bill of this nature, which proposed to make employers provide such accommodation for shearers. Generally the conditions under which shcarers'woiked were right.. There might ba isolated cases • where the conditions wero not what they should be, but there was no call for legislation such as was proposed in this Bill. Ho moved that the members for tho district and tho Advisory Cr.muiittco bo asked to oppose tho .Bill. He pointed out that shearers were in a different position to workers in tho town, who were-compelled to work at filed occupations. Shearers often left regular occupations •to i'ako on shearing a* a matter of choice because good money was to'be made at it and they knew the conditions under which they had to work. Mr. Lambie did not believe in tho Bill. There wore certain economic laws that governed this and other things and all legislation that was not in accordance with those . laws would only prove dangerous and abortive. He seconded the motion. ' Messrs. Jones, Cleaver and Davidson expressed opposition to tho Bill. The motion was carried.
