WAGES INCREASED.
CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL EMPLOYEES. IBy Telecraph.-Pres* Association.! Christchurch, August 17. Regarding the increase of sixpence per day in the wages of certain of the City Council's employees, the Mayor (Mr. J. J. Dougall) states:—"For a considerable time past there has been an agitation to increase the rate of wages, and from the time of last election it has betu quito evident that tho question would havo to be faced by tho present council. Tho council apparently dirt not wish to set up onr standard oi wage whirh would conflict with tho award rate, but it thought that an extra payment of sixponce a day to married men who wero receiving eight shillings a day or low would not be a violation of anv principle, while it would confer a benefit upon a class of men who were very conscientious in tho discharge of their duties, and who were entitled to such remuneration as tho .op'incH could grant them. Tho resolution adopted was uot altogether unanimous, but it was very nearly so. So far as I know, thore i* no intention on the part of the council to make .1 general risein wages nil round, ami it i* hoped that what has boon done will tattle any question botwopn tho council and its employees for a considerable time to come. Tho increase involved is about JCI'JSO a year."
